New season for winged beans

Winged beans are slowly taking over the trellies. I purposely let some kind of plant which look like bush to grow. It will become good place for the winged beans. Good support and I do not have to watch out for the trellies during storm or heavy rain! ;)

Soon this whole area will be covered by winged beans. In malaysia , we called it "Kacang botol".  It has a tart taste. I love cooking it with chilli and shrimp. It's really tasty!

After 2 months of full beans production, winged beans now facing the ageing process. The leaves have turn yellow and some kind of infection on the leaves. The flowers have reduce so much and very few pods available. Soon the place will be cleared for new vegetables. I haven't decide what to be planted at that area but some vegetables for sure.

I read somewhere that the young leaves and the root is edible. Anyone have tasted them?

Butterfly

To tell the truth, I seldom have the chance to snap butterfly photos! They just move very fast! Last weekend, I saw a lot of butterflies in my garden mainly on my winged beans. May be the flower's nectar is very sweet! I saw few yellow butterflies and this dotted butterflies! It's a joy to see them around even though the caterpillars are not really welcomed in my garden.....

However, I only manage to take this 2 shots...sigh.... It's moving so fast for me take a picture!

This is my first time with Winged beans. The harvest is good. Enough for us and for the neighbours and friends! Every weekend I will have a plastic bag full of them for my weekend cooking. Nor pest at the moment! That's the good news. I think this is among my best production vegetable!

Finally the winged beans have set beans! Previously there were so many flowers but most of it drop down. May be the rain have drench them.

I should admit that i put very minimum attention to Winged bean vine! I don't know how long it takes for them to flower in good condition but mine took 3 months. I almost forgot about this plant even though it's just front of my back door.

I never put a proper trellis for them to climb, so they decided to get over my Marigold then up to the gate! Plants have their own way to survive!

Kacang Botol @ Winged Beans

Winged beans also known as Goa beans or Asparagus beans. In Malay we call it Kacang Botol. "Botol" is Bottle in English. Direct translation will be Bottle beans. I do not know why we call it in such a name in Malay. May be because of the shape....

This plant love hot and humid environment and it's really suitable to be planted in here!

When i first planted winged beans, the bed was empty but now Balsam have taken over most of the place. Invasive but i like Balsam too! My winged beans don't have a proper trellis so i just let it climb on the recycle laundry stack and the corn stalk. Once it's long enough i will let it climb on the gate near by.
